How To Make Good Habits Stick In 66 Days Or Less: Don't Break The Chain Method

Listen, if there's one thing that is sure, it's that creating good habits and sticking to them is hard. All too often we get started on a new habit, and then lose sight of the reason we are trying to build them.

Thankfully, there are ways to help ensure your success when you are wanting to start a new habit and enjoy the process at the same time.

Keep on reading. I'm going to show you one of the exactly how you can create new habits that stick... and how you can do it in 66 days or less!

Seinfeld Story (Don't Break The Chain)

According to a story published on jamesclear.com, an up-and-coming comedian had the chance to talk with Seinfeld. Realizing that he had to take advantage of this rare moment, he asked him the burning question... "How do I become a better comic?"

Jerry's response...?

To become a better comic, you need to write better jokes.

And the best way to create better jokes is to write every day.

He told the aspiring comic to hang a big wall calendar in a prominent place. One page, with a whole year on it... Then go out and buy a big red marker.

"For each day that you complete your task of writing a joke, mark a huge red "X" on the calendar." said Jerry.

“After a few days you'll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You'll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt."

"Your only job is to not break the chain.

Why Does The "Seinfeld Strategy" Work...?

This strategy is so simple. It can be used by anyone. And it works for two reasons:

  1. As humans, we love crossing things off. Each time you strike a date off your calendar, your brain gets a lovely little dopamine hit.
  2. The longer you hold a streak, the higher the stakes become. You will not want to lose that streak.

Here's an example:

If you are on day 5 of a 66-day streak (why 66 days? I'll reveal that soon...), you may not feel so terrible if you give up and don't accomplish your task for the day, since you haven't made much progress.

But if you are on day 59 of 66, the stakes are high. You won't want to give up. You've come too far. You're so close to achieving your goal!

In harnessing the power of that little dopamine hit, and the good feeling of marking something off the calendar, it will carry you to the "point of no return".

Your new habit will become second nature!

Why 66 Days (Your Challenge)

Multiple studies have been done on habits, trying to figure out how long it takes to change one, or start a new one, and how to make them stick.

The average time it takes to alter or establish habits is approximately 66 days.

Now, this number is an average, and it can differ among individuals. But usually, the magic number is 66 days.

Which brings me to the challenge I have for you...

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to choose a habit you would like to start, or one you would like to change.

And then, you're going to leverage the power of the "Seinfeld Strategy".

For the next 66 days you will perform the habit of your choice. Every single day. Without fail. Each day putting a huge red "X" through that date, giving yourself more and more of those beautiful little dopamine hits to keep you going.
