How to Set Goals That'll Give You Clarity, Focus, and Consistency for 90 Days or More
Having clear goals is the single most important factor in determining whether an entrepreneur or business owner succeeds.
If you’re an entrepreneur or business owner, you’ll know the feeling of being constantly pulled from one direction to another.
And if you don’t have clear goals, a clear direction, and the consistency to stick with the plan… Then your chances of success are close to zero.
Welcome to the “Hamster Wheel of Death”...
You just keep running on that hamster wheel spending your limited time and attention on “busy work” tasks without any real direction, deadline, or way to measure your progress.
It’s no wonder that you find it hard to reach your goals!
Thankfully, the solution is found in the 3 simple steps below.
- Create a powerful single-line goal statement
- Discover your key motivators to keep you going
- Keep yourself accountable while you do it.
It’s a 3-step recipe for goal-setting success. And it will take you less than 5 minutes to get it done.
And if you don’t feel like reading, click the video below!
1. The single-line goal statement will give you clarity, keep you motivated and focused on real results
At the top of your Goal Setting Template, you will find the “Primary Goal Outcome” section.
But before you put pen to paper and start writing your objective, take a look at your business.
Find the biggest opportunity, the one with the most leverage and potential. Or, find your “weakest link” – A burden on your business you must eliminate or fix if you’re going to grow.
And then, the most important part, find an easily measurable metric so you can keep track of your success. This is critical. Always remember: “What gets measured gets done.”
The metrics you are looking to measure are things like revenue, average order value, conversion rate, and the like. These are metrics that are not only easily tracked, but also generally have the most impact in any business. Find which one will have the most impact on your business over the next 90-days, and go for it.
Now, your Primary Goal Statement will be in a simple and easy-to-understand format: “I will X from Y to Z before DEADLINE.”
Easy, right? Here’s an example to help make it more clear…
“I will increase the sales of my quarterly revenue (X) from 200 (Y) to 300 (Z) before August 3rd.”
Now, if you’re using the Finisher’s Journal to help you launch a new business or product, there is one highly-important difference to understand, and that’s this...
Always decide on a start date. Your business isn’t a real business until you get that first sale or client. So you must always decide on a start date.
This will help you stay focused and not lose momentum, and keep you motivated to get this money-making machine off the ground.
Not to mention save you the embarrassment of having yet another project gathering dust on your hard drive or in your notebook.
Let’s look at an example...
Ted loves computers and wants to launch his own computer store named Ted’s Computers. He’s a man with many original ideas, as you can tell.
Anyway, Ted would set his Primary Goal Objective as follows:
“I will launch Ted’s Computers before November 15 and increase revenue from $0 to $10,000 by December 31st.”
But the Finishers Journal 2.0 isn’t just for your business goals - It’s powerful for your personal goals, too. For example, if you were looking to read more, here’s how you would write your Primary Goal Objective…
“I will increase the number of pages I read per day from 50 to 100 by December 10.”
Now, here’s a bonus tip for you:
Most people will set goals based on revenue or sales or a similar metric...
But a more effective way is to focus on an even more specific goal, such as increasing conversion rate, average order value, customer lifetime value, page visitors, and other metrics that will have a direct and measured impact on your business.
You will see there is also a space for “Secondary Goals.” We highly recommend, especially if it is your first time setting goals in this way, to keep yourself focused on one goal and one goal only. However…
Should you wish to set secondary goals, make sure you do not go anywhere near those goals until you have completed your Primary Goal Objective.
Don’t touch ‘em, no matter how tempting it may be!
If you don’t want to leverage Secondary Goals, here’s a great way to use them for a little extra motivation:
Tell yourself you will set your Secondary Goals after you have accomplished your Primary Goal Objective, and give yourself a reason to push a bit harder to reach your goal earlier.
Now that the heavy lifting is out of the way and you have your Primary Goal Objective, it’s time for the fun part…
2. Find Your "Why" (Your 3 Key Motivators)
Ask any person you would say is successful in any field what kept them disciplined during the hard times, and they will almost all give you the same answer: They knew their “reason why.”
Popularized in the book “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek, this concept is not just for leaders, but for everything in life.
Think about some moments in your life where you have achieved something great – I’m sure you will also be able to remember why you wanted to achieve that great thing in the first place.
Finding your “why” allows you to leverage deep emotions to push you over the line, keep you motivated and focused, and get you back on track on the days when you just don’t feel like doing anything (which will come.. they do to all of us!)
This is relatively simple but extremely powerful. All you need to do is write down the emotional reason why you want to accomplish this goal.
In the second section of the Finishers Journal 2.0, you will find a space to write your “3 Key Motivators.”
These key motivators are your “reasons why.”
Here’s a tip to help you:
- Don’t write “I want to be rich,” instead write, “I want to provide a better future for my family and children.”
- Don’t write “I want to be successful,” instead write, “I want to prove everyone who ever told me I couldn’t achieve anything 100% unequivocally WRONG!”
The higher the emotion, the more powerful your 3 Key Motivators will be when you need them most. And the more likely you will be to follow through.
But there’s one final trick to help you really make sure you follow through with your plans…
3. Keep Yourself Accountable
The final section of the Finisher Journal 2.0 Goal Setting Template is where you will figure out how you will stay accountable for reaching your goals. What will happen if you don’t reach what you’re aiming for?
Now, most people will choose to reward themselves when they reach their goals. But we’ve found an even more powerful and effective way to leverage accountability… Punishment.
This comes down to a basic human principle: We are more likely to do something to avoid loss than to achieve gain.
Here’s an example:
Every week you will check in with your partner, and if you haven’t achieved your goal for that week, you pay them $1,000.
Another great one is using donations. Tell your partner or friends that if you don’t achieve your goal, you must donate $1,000 to a charity or organization you absolutely hate and would never want to give any money to.
You’ll be amazed where this negative accountability will take you.
