How to Stop Getting Distracted and Focus Better

Do you want to stop getting distracted by notifications, phone calls, and even your own head?

How about double or triple your focus on even the most boring of tasks?

Keep reading... You're about to learn a three part distraction filter technique that can remove 50-70% of distractions, so you are more productive and more focused than ever before.

First you need to realize.... it's not you!

Here are the facts:

In a Microsoft study from 2015, published in Time Magazine, they found that humans have an average attention span of a tiny 8 seconds...

That's 1 second less than a goldish!

Even worse, the average time to refocus after a distraction is a whopping 23 minutes and 15 seconds.

And if you work at a computer, it takes an average of just 40 seconds before you are distracted by something or someone, according to an article from the New York Times.

The 3 Part Distraction Filter Technique: How to do better work, and be more productive and focused.

This 3 step process will allow you to remove between 50% to 70% of distractions, allowing you to focus more deeply and get more done than ever before.

Part 1: Deep Work

"Deep Work" is a term coined by Cal Newport in his book, Deep Work. We've taken the best practices from the book for setting yourself up for successful, focused sessions.

It's a simple 4-step process that allows you to remove all distractions and focus solely on the one task, giving it all your attention.

Step 1: Block off 40-50 minutes in your schedule for your "Deep Work" session.

Step 2: Plan the task that you want to get done in that time frame.

Step 3: Clean your desk entirely of anything that you don't need for your task. Take your phone, Apple Watch, or anything else that could distract you, and put them outside of the room.

Step 4: Let everybody know not to disturb you for the next 40-50 minutes, while you complete the task. If possible, even lock your door to avoid being interrupted.

Now, to get the most out of this practice, it's best to do this at least once a day, preferably at the same time every day. This will "train" your brain to focus deeply at these times of the day, allowing you to slip into Deep Work easily and quickly.

Over time you will develop a habit and routine, making it easier and easier every time you do your Deep Work sessions.

Part 2: Keep a "distraction journal"

The idea behind a "distraction journal" is to help you stay focused on task, but not avoid any ideas that may come into your head as you work.

Our brains don't like being focused. They don't like staying on one task at a time, and will try and distract you while you're working by bringing up other "important" things you need to do.

Your brain will do everything it can to try and distract you from your task at hand.

The "distraction journal" can help stop this.

Here's how it works:

As you're working, write down any idea, thought, note, something you need to tell someone – anything that comes into your mind while you're doing your Deep Work session.

This let's your brain release the idea to look at later, letting you keep your focus on the task you're working on.

The Finisher's Journal has a space each day for writing down these notes, keeping everything neat, tidy, and in one place.

Once you're done with your Deep Work session, you can look back at the things you noted down, and you'll probably notice that up to 80% of these "urgent" tasks your brain was trying to distract you with, are actually not urgent at all.

Part 3: White Noise Timers

Timers are amazing for Deep Work sessions!

They add a huge sense of urgency, pushing you to get the work done within the time that you allowed for the task, as well as adding an reward for the end.

Combining timers with white noise background sounds is not only amazing for masking other sounds and helping you stay in the zone, white noise is also known to reduce stress and boost creativity.

We have a full playlist of white noise sounds, with timers, on our YouTube channel.

You can listen to them here.

Bookmark these white noise sounds so they are always available to you, ready for your Deep Work sessions.

Get focused, and stay there.

We hope this three part distraction filter technique helps you stay focused, productive, and get more done.
